What is the operational, practical, or other difference between Lionel diesels equipped with trucks as shown in the photos? Both engines are models of the SD70ACe...I believe the 38750 appeared before the 28264.

Since no one has replied yet, I'll give it a guess. If nothing else you will get a bump up.
I don't know, but the top picture looks like better quality and possibly needing two wires, one wire to each pick-up roller. The bottom picture looks like a little less quality, rollers look smaller (I can't exactly tell from the picture?) and possibly they are tied together requiring only one wire. So maybe cost savings?
The Lionel engines I have so far use the 2 pick-up rollers and the rollers appear to be of very good quality. Other guess would be the bottom picture was an earlier design that caused a problem and the top picture was the improved version with better operation and more expense?
the bottom Roller P/U were used also in the Rs11 Odyssey versions. I don't like them because they use a smaller gauge wire for power input. The upper Roller P/U are a bit more sturdy and probably used a larger gauge wire.
I think the UP loco has Lionels "original " "Liondrive truck". If you rotate it 180 degress it will slip out from the chassis.
The top loco may still have the removable truck feature, its hard to tell from Lionels parts photos.

6-28264 This clearly has the "ears" that slip into the notches in the chassis.
IMO The biggest signifigant difference is that if you remove the collector, and the 4 screws on the truck bottom of the UP 6- 28264 loco. You get full access to the worm gear for greasing. I prefer this style truck for this reason.
Thanks for the responses...it is interesting to me that the pickups and truck set that is deemed to be of cheaper quality is on one of the latest ES44AC models.
