I have Lionel's manual gantry crane with hook (6-2302.) I am considering partially electrifying the unit and I am wondering if anyone has experimented with it and added servos or small DC motors to rotate the cab and raise/lower the boom. I am not interested in having it move forward or backwards.

I would also add an electromagnet to the crane hook though that is likely the easiest part to hook up and wire.

Any suggestions on approach and whether it is worth the effort would be appreciated.

I ask this question out of ignorance, but does Lionel share the tooling of their operating gantry cranes with their manual versions? In which case it seems one approach is to selectively populate your manual version with spare parts (motors, electromagnet, wiring, etc.) from their operating version.

I have to believe it'll be much easier, and probably cheaper, to just look for a motorized one.

I agree with GRJohn' assessment. I've done what you are asking about and would not recommend it unless you have a lot of time on your hands.
