H-10 Western Allegheny showed up today from Trainworld.  Those guys really know how to ship a locomotive; I asked them to double box it and they did including packing.  See photos below.  Shipper in a box and in a box!

Fantastic loco and tender, no blemishes, no stripped screws anywhere, hatches close flush.  Put 15 drops Lionel smoke in stack and whistle and they smoke like crazy.  Only 2 issues:  the right rear lantern on the tender is dimmer than the other - maybe a misplacement of the led that I will look at if I ever get into the tender.  AND the sound and whistle went intermittent BUT found a bunch of buffalo snow from the carpet layout wrapped around the lead pickup on the tender - DOH!  Easy fix.

I am opening my Western Allegheny H-10 #85 after dinner.  

I have had LED lights that were dim at first, become brighter after a few hours of use.  I would wait on opening the tender for that marker lighting issue.  (The right rear light on my SP GS-4 #4449 tender became brighter with run-time.)  Now both sides are the same.  Give it ten hours of time.

Think most would agree that the Lionel Legacy PRR H9/H10 locos have been a big hit with many. If Lionel is looking for other road names that used H9/H10 locos then don't forget the NPBL RR (Norfolk, Portsmouth Belt Line) which was using PRR H10s in 1956 when they dieselized. R. Prince's book on the RF&P has a section on NPBL steam through the years.

Lionel changed something in the smoke unit software code starting with the AC-9 Legacy engines. I have two of them and they are much more prolific smokers than most previous Legacy engines, excepting the first run Legacy 6 Ohm heating element FEF-3's and a few other engines of the same vintage. Exactly what it is they changed they have not said - and probably won't and I can't guess. Maybe it allows more power to the heating element (I can't think of anything else) but the improvement in smoke output is considerable. I am betting that the downside is reduced life of components but that is also a guess.

For one, if you shine a light down the stack there's one fat *** resistor in there.  The biggest one I've ever seen. It almost blocks the entire stack opening.

The fans run strong and don't make the sickening grinding whine of previous units. Lionel may have finally figured out how to build a smoke unit.

A truly impressive model.  Sounds and smoke effects are excellent.

What type of pilot do these models come with?  Someone said that it was not a foot board pilot that all the prototype engines had.  That it was the slatted pilot.  If all the models come with the incorrect slatted pilot, can that pilot be easily removed?  Or is it part of the frame?

RickO, I think you hit the nail on the head.  In the H-10, its a straight shot to the resistor and then the wadding.  In other locos there is a funnel or channels to distribute the fluid like those in the Big Boy and Niagara and maybe that explains meager smoke.

From an accuracy standpoint. The pilot is the least of this models problems.

Things like, the boiler is to long, and the driver spacing /position is incorrect. I believe the Belpaire firebox isn't quite right , too steep maybe? Technically the bell shouldn't swing either. In reality its Lionels rerun of  H9 tooling. It even says so on the builders plates on the smoke box.

This was covered in detail in previous H10 threads. 

This is  not a bash, I purchased one of these knowing full well the inaccuracies. Its still a super smooth runner with phenominal slow speed capabilities.

However, if your looking for fidelity to the prototype the MTH H10 is the way to go.
