Tonight is was running my Lionel 6-18745 Hallows Eve Loco. I consider it to me new even thought I have had it for a couple of years and it only gets run around Halloween and it is not all of the time.

It has always worked well until tonight. I notices a tapping sound so I took if off the track and oiled all of the side rods. I put it back on the track and it made another short lap with the same noise. So , I removed the pick up rollers and bottom plate, to grease the main gear. It was on the rear axle.

I also saw something on the front axle, but was not sure what it was for? My guess is the smoke unit nut not sure. I checked the owners manual, and is shows nothing about lubricating the gears.

Not sure what to do no? I am wondering if western depot make repairs is I cannot get this figured out. I did not want to ship it accross the US. any Ideas since this is similar to the Harry Potter Engine?

Thanks,

Joe

Aaron,

jut that.  A friend had suggested that I remove the shell to see there was anything internally that was binding, when I took the shell however, is when I saw the lever going fro the cam to the smoke unit, and was not sure if I should grease this?

These was nothing in the owner's manual about greasing the main bearing cam.

I think it might try this. Do you think this would enough to to keep that front axles from turning?

A tapping sound is probably not a lube issue.  Squeaking or grinding noises are indications of lack-of-lube.

Look at anything that moves on the engine, such as the side rods or the smoke plunger and make sure it isn't hitting anything.  Also check that the side rods are not bent and causing contact.

i don't know how the smoke unit works on that engine, but my postwar engines, such as my 621 turbine, makes a very audible tapping sound when the smoke unit lever contacts the smoke unit piston.  The tapping sound is absolutely normal on that engine.  If your smoke unit uses a fan to puff the smoke, then the tapping sound should not occur.

Another possibility is a foreign object in your engine contacting one of the moving parts. I had a Lionel Legacy Atlantic engine that had an extra connector lodged in the engine, presumably during manufacture. The engine ran perfectly fine until the warranty was up.  Then the foreign object shorted out one of the electronic modules and it cost me a little over $100 for the parts to repair the engine.

If possible, run the engine with the shell off and watch closely for anything unusual.

Good luck with your troubleshooting...

Earl

I had contacted Matt to ask him about sending my engine as Lionel was ridiculous, and he gave me a few tips.

So, before shipping it I decided to tear it down. I found the rear axle, had a shim that was reversed, causing it to bind. I put it back into position and greases the main screw thoroughly, as well as the cam that helps operate the smoke unit. I re-assembled and tested and it runs like a champ! Thanks Matt!!

A short time ago, I picked up a recent Lionel 0-6-0 train set that had a problem with a bind in the mechanism. Posted about it here, and a few others said they had a similar problem.

It turned out that the smoke unit lever was trying to push the smoke unit piston up too high. Bending the smoke unit level very slightly resolved the problem.

Sounds like you may have a similar problem.
