I know I'm fortunate in owning a Lionel JLC Big Boy but I do have a question. I know Lionel doesn't (i.e. never) releases production figures for any of their products - especially JLC engines. However a few years ago I was told Lionel might have made as many as 1700 JLC Big Boys, although never confirmed, but my question is who actually made them?

I don't know for sure but I think they were all made in Korea, including the earlier JLC Big Boy, and maybe the more recent JLC C&O Allegheny. I did hear a recent rumor that Ajin might have actually made them under license to Lionel.

Is there any truth to this rumor or am I way off base?

The first Lionel Big Boy was not JLC, if that's what you meant by "earlier JLC Big Boy". In fact the first Lionel Big Boy seems pretty inferior when compared to their new one. Huge difference all-around and a big reason why I decided to sell mine.

As for production numbers, my guess was they were low as I have not seen a reasonably-priced one on Ebay in quite some time. The few I can even remember were either full MSRP or in the stratosphere.
