Hi Everyone

Most of my trains are MTH with protosound, but was looking at some Lionel Legacy Engines on Ebay

Is there a way you can tell if the Engine has a Battery in it or a Capacitor in it ?

i looked in the Owners Manual for a 6-84629 and it does not Mention either one

If it has a Capacitor where is it located is it built into one of the Boards ?

Regards

Prentice

It has neither.

You are mixing and matching the rules.

Lionel- does not require a battery or capacitor for operation. Some units with Railsounds specifically may have a battery connector for an optional- keyword there- optional non-rechargeable 9V battery- that ONLY powers the railsounds, only when track power is dropped for a few seconds during conventional operation. In fact, very new recent Lionel Legacy engines no longer have this ability or 9V battery wiring.

MTH PS1, PS2, and PS3 all either use a battery or capacitor for powering the control electronics including sounds, and is REQUIRED for proper operation. They will not properly operate without.

Again newer Lionel Legacy engines have removed the optional 9V non-rechargeable battery wiring harness as well as any place for the battery holder.

Parts breakdown for your engine says that RSL3 (AKA Railsounds Lite). https://www.lionelsupport.com/...SD40T-2-4029-6-84629

Again, natively, the wiring harness and provisions within the engine do not support adding a battery. That said, in theory, this might be a candidate for 3rd Party support, where a specialized plug in super capacitor device, with custom charging circuit, may be compatible with this specific model for conventional operation- of railsounds only

This one specifically has the JST connector to match to the battery port of Railsounds Lite.
