LIONEL LEGACY ENGINE GOES INTO CONVENTIONAL BY ITSELF

I have Lionel Legacy 38587 Conrail SD80MAC that starts in Legacy Control and goes into conventional after a short time running.

Using the Legacy 990 system remote for controlling engine. I do not change anything while running engine - only the red knob for speed control but all of a sudden it goes into conventional and takes off. Strange action.

Any help to resolve this issue is appreciated.
