one note is the reason it burned up was an issue the that run of RCMCs. I don’t know if it was software or defective components but either way you should also replace the RCMC of this will happen again

I am starting to think this may not be worth it.  Each smoke unit is $70.  Two smoke units plus the RCMC board is going to be $340.00.

I purchased a Lionel Legacy Frisco Meteor 4-8-4 (SKU: 2031240) a couple of years ago.  It is equipped with two smoke units.  One stopped working and the other (for the whistle smoke) actually melted (the impeller is even melted).  The two smoke units are shown in the photos below.  When this failure occurred a few years ago, Lionel did not have the correct smoke unit, so I simply set the locomotive aside.

I have found a smoke units that appear to match the ones from the locomotive.  Is this the correct smoke unit?

I had the exact same thing happen. I ended up sending it back to Lionel and they replaced both smoke units and the RCMC board at no charge to me. No one said it out loud, but it sure felt like something they had seen frequently, because they accepted the warranty claim with no pushback at all. Good luck!
