Lionel Legacy Pacifics

I wanna see them!!!!

I will post a pic of my NP (if it shows up).  I didnt see it listed on shipper to my dealer yet...  but some folks think they are on the way...

I have the Lionel Reading & Northern coming in from RO.  So I will put pics up too. 

I already saw some appearing on eBay.

Now the Pacifics are appearing in stores. Let's have a look at them!

Hope to get mine tomorrow nite.  Will post the NP.

Did any of dealers receive their Pacifics yet?  If so, please showcase them.

After a 5hr drive to and back from LHS, im not likely to upload a picture tonite...  maybe later if i feel better.  What usually takes 2.5hrs was alot longer in traffic...

I pulled the mallet pics off this pacific post...  i just started a 2-6-6-2 post so we can keep this post to pacifics!

What does the whistle sound like? Different bell sound I hope than the 4-4-2s?

The Q-6 Pacific was one of my favorite locomotives. Note the unique smoke tunnel cap, sand domes, bell position, large pilot wheels, heavy boiler,  missing feed water heater, and stout head lamp. Some were even painted with grey boilers as well.  What really is a bummer is they have the wrong valve gear and side rods on it 

Maybe another NP fan can chime in here?

J, this is typical of the big 3. This is a model of USRA Pacific. Only handful of Railroads got them, heavy or light. Not the NP. It appears the one you pictured is unique to NP. Maybe 3rd Rail will do one or maybe Lionel will do a hybrid but if they do a hybrid it would likely have the USRA drive. I wouldn't hold my breath.

At some point you guys have to just quit 3 rail and go to HO brass.  Thats the only way you will get the details you desire.

If you look hard enough, even the best o scale engines are not like the real engines.  There are way too many details on the real engines that just cant be replicated in any economy on a model selling 50 copies.

This is a fantasy scheme engine, to offer a painted model for NP fans, which there are very few of.

A train company just cant make a buisness case for specialized tooling for a few copies of an obscure engine that only two or three guys would order...

Still, any videos with sound and whistle of the new Pacific?

Going to HO is NOT an option for most of us like me. I think Lionel was on the right track with its Hybrid brass locomotive, however on round 2 of making the K2a N&W they picked a locomotive too close to the J, thus the low orders.

My point is why make a horrible fantasy item that almost insults the NP fan. This is not really helping the railroad modeling community. I still remember the NP version of the EM-1 from Lionel and almost fell off my chair. Next will be a UP challenger with a NP road name on it?

John...  i agree about the 2nd brass hybrid engine...  i didnt have the urge to get one.

My point is the production volumes in HO are so much larger, a company can do specialized scale brass items.  In O they just cant.

So you can't hold the O scale companies, to the HO standard...

The NP Em1 was also intended for the few customers who just wanted a EM1 in NP...  i have one and love it.  There was at least 25 of us who got that NP EM1.  The few fantasy schemes help to fill out the production run.

I did not pay much attention to these when they came out; nice, but not on my radar, as I'm about full.

Is the tooling based on the too-long B&O, Erie and Chicago & Alton Pacifics from the past? I think Lionel made a too-long PRR K-4 using this chassis, too, before switching to the K-Line tooling. The photos above do seem to show a loco that is too long in the firebox area for a Pacific. (I turned my TMCC "Erie" into a Hudson; waiting on re-lettering; makes a great freelance 4-6-4.)

I have the TMCC C&A 4-6-2; beautiful loco, but it's the length of the Lionel scale USRA Mountain.

Actually, more USRA loco were built after the first allocations, as "copies" and later "based ons". This varied with type, but the USRA Light Pacific was a widespread basis. Also, the USRA-ness of a loco was not so much the surface appearance as it was the specs and dimensions

The beautiful USRA 2-6-6-2, popular with us modelers, was never copied, and only 30 were ever built.

Unfortunately, MTH in particular insists on calling its USRA 4-6-2 a "USRA Heavy Pacific", but it is actually more the Light Pacific above than the Heavy.

The old Samhongsa Williams brass USRA Pacific was pretty much a Heavy. Bigger boiler, different, lower domes. A huskier look.

Me too!!  I really like this locomotive; reminds me of the Lionels my buddies had in the late 50's; many hours of wonder.

I just got word from RO, my 425 will be here from FedEx on Saturday.

I like Fedex and USPS - they deliver on Saturday.

I love this pacific so much i am thinking about maybe getting that green b&o...  anyone order that?

Thought about the green B&O but wasn't sure of its in person color vs photos.

How could they be mad.  I think i need that B&O.

Hopefully they put that sand dome where it belongs.  Kinda looks like a supercharger sitting there on the side.

You make a good point.

Hard to tell on some of the ones in the catalog where the sand dome is located.

Actually, it's the steam dome that's dislodged.  The sand dome is right where it should be.

That B&O engine sure looks nice. What color passenger cars would this engine have pulled? Pullman Green? Or did it also pull some later blue cars like what is shown in the same catalog as these engines.

Yea rusty... no sand pipes from it...

but with that dynamo sticking out, kinda looks like a blower!

I'm surprised that the whistle on the Southern one is the same as the Vision Line Big Boy.

The video clips on YouTube I have heard of the Southern PS-4 whistle sound similar to the 844's whistle. The Big L probably thought close enough, use it...

And is less expensive.

Hey folks. At work today I was in charge of unboxing a few Pacifics for our display. Here are some shots of the 425, and I also compared it to the MTH version. Additionally, I grabbed some photos of the Halloween version. 

Now let's hope to see a video of 425 soon.

Bingo! Every time I look at one of the new Pacific's the firebox gets longer. It's in dire need of a 2 axle truck lol.

 Having said that. I really hope those that ordered them enjoy them.

I don't know if that's 425's whistle, but I'll have to see a video to confirm. Other than that, it sounds nice. Hope to hear 290's whistle soon.

I think Eric Siegel has the B&O Pacific after seeing it on his webcam.

I cant decide b&o or southern crescent in black...  so video would help me too...

Tough decision; I was at that point between the Atlanta & West Point (the black is beautiful) and the B&O (shade of green with yellow trim for it being different); such turmoil in our little world.

I was up all night thinking about it...  lol

I took a big chance and pre-ordered the Halloween Pacific - am glad to see it turned out very cool I can't wait to get it on the tracks.

I guess I'll just forget it. I was so caught up in my excitement, I was pushing people to post theirs (as a way of keeping this thread from dying).

I'm confused by the blue Lionel used. Looks like the old style color blue as opposed to the darker blue 425 currently wears, but they also chose to use the new style logo. Odd.

Same for the drivers and trailing truck which should be blue....they were able to color the other Pacifics....

I think the blue has to do with money. They probably don't have every color, so they use the closest ones possible. Or the blue has something to do with the lighting in the pictures.

Are the cab roof and walkways on 425 supposed to be black like the MTH version?

Not my video, but someone on the Tube was courteous enough to show his Lionel 425 in action.

The whistle sounds incredible. Easily a match for the whistle on the MTH model.

Here is my video I just got done recording.  Sorry for the poor quality, hope you like it.  I do, especially the whistle.
