I have one that the wires were shorted out on. It killed the transformer but I have yet to track down a transformer

After searching for about 20 minutes, I see what you mean about trying to track down an 8VAC 16VA transformer.  Lionel doesn't appear to be selling the 990 Base power supply (6204202000) anymore either.  Bummer.

When you say the wires were shorted, do you mean that they were accidentally crossed, did the cable wire insulation melt or something else?

Out of curiosity, have you opened the housing to check the fuse?

Sorry I wasn’t specific the original post was about the Cab-2 backlight and that was the transformer I was referring to. (Before anyone says I just don’t feel like taking a another Cab-2 PCB to fix a backlight because I doubt Lionel’s is doing component levels repair and someone else may really need that to fix and actually broken cab-2)

wires to the touchpad backlight were shorted by a screw I’m assuming from the factory. The secondary windings of that transformer no longer exist 😜.

this should be repairable but I haven’t dug into it, so to the original post it’s possible to repair the backlight depending what’s wrong but for most people right now easiest thing to do is call Lionel for a RA
