I am having an issue with the B&O SD70 derailing in curves, item 2133331.  My layout is 0-54, and I have several other SD70s, all different runs including both Lionel (2 units) and MTH (6 units) , and this is the only engine I’ve had this problem.  It happens at a consistent spot on the layout.  It happens regardless of speed.

It is on the rear axle leading wheel, right side of engine the wheel with the traction tire.

I know a few years ago Lionel put the wrong traction tire on the engine, is this a possibility?  They had a recall on it, it was the SP engine in black widow paint scheme.

I am at a loss as I love the engine, I just want it to do a loop with out derailing.

I did a search before posting this but came up empty.

Thanks in advance.

Here is what I did.

  1. Checked the traction tire.  It was fine, properly seated.  Compared it to other Lionel SD70s, looked the same, I believe the traction tire is correct.
  2. I looked to see if there was any debris in the area - none.
  3. I took a picture and made a film to identify the location where the derailment was occurring.  I could see the outside truck riding up the rail.  This is the area of concern.  It appears the track has somehow widened.  I ran freight cars over with no engine and could not get the issue to repeat itself.
  4. I tried this with another Lionel SD70 , and the issue repeated itself. I realize in my original post, I said this hadn't occurred, it hadn't.  This must be something new - not an enhancement
  5. The bar is down on the B&O - not the issue.

I will try some other locomotives tomorrow to see if this is more widespread or not.  Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

John,

What kind of track are you using? If it is sectional can you easily replace the track section where the engine is derailing? Do you have a track gauge? If not take a clean piece of typing paper and rub it on a reaction of straight track then fold the paper so that you have a good section of the track stains on the paper go to the suspect section of track and see how the rails match up.

Locomotives are funny I have a set of Legacy E8s that derail on my clubs switches but run fine on my friends layout. He has a set of both Williams and MTH E8s that never have a problem. Now that several SD70ACE locomotive are derailing at the same spot the track would be more of a suspect than before when it was only the new one derailed. Especially if your other SD70a are older and never gave you a problem before. Good Luck!
