I have a Lionel 6-31918 4-6-4 Loco with a mechanical smoke unit. The issue is that the smoke lever is not engaged with the drive mechanism. I checked the parts break down of a similar loco and I cannot find the part that is missing to correct this. Any help or a photo showing how the smoke mechanism operates would be appreciated.

Is your loco cab # 305? Check HERE.
No it is 308. I checked the breakdown of the parts diagram you sent and it appears to be same Loco I have. I still don't know what part I need to correct this issue?
#56?

Well, it looks like part #56, the smoke lever, acts directly on the piston from rod action.
Maybe the lever isnt in the correct position. It should be pushed from I belive the cross head or a rod. I could be wrong though. A few different types of action were used
I researched my Loco further on the Lionel website and although there are no parts replacement listing, I did find another 4-6-4 Hudson #6-38687 that has the same mechanism. The smoke lever part listed is #6SP-8060-302 which is intact but what engages the lever from the drive mechanism to move the lever? That is what I am missing. The smoke lever in the previous post is not the correct one.
What is the catalog number from the loco box?
The catalog number is 6-31918

That looks like the set number.
That's the only reference number I have. If someone has a similar Loco and can provide a photo the underside of the drive mechanism to show me how the smoke lever assembly operates that would be great.
