i plan to order an item this weekend and would like to know if the item is not in stock, do they notify you and cancel the order or do they keep the order open until the part arrives then ship it out. If the latter, is there someway to cancel the order rather than waiting for the cows to come home for the item.

The online inventory is pretty close. Only once was an item ordered that was not actually in stock. In that case it was not charged for.
There are no back orders. You will know almost immediately the status of your order. Forget the cows.
