Hey guys I got a 4-4-2 off of the bay a couple years ago. It's the power for the holiday train this year. Only problem the spring that holds the front truck tension on the rails is shot. Is there a way to fix this in house, or do I need to outsource. I've really only worked PW stuff. Nothing modern. So I'm curious.

This may help- once I lost the front truck spring for an engine. I epoxied a small, round hardware store magnet to the bottom of the truck. The magnet holds the truck to the rails, like Magnetraction. Easy, and cheap!!
You should have no trouble getting the spring from your local hardware store. The above magnet idea is an interesting one. That is something I personally would try just because the Pennsy Flyer 4-4-2 is such a #*$*@) @#)*@$* to take apart and especially put back together.
Ok. Thanks. I'm going to try the magnet. I'll let you guy know how it works out
AVR conductor- good luck!
SJC- you are right about re-assembly! I disassembled one I gave to my brother for his tree train, and the pieces are still in a coffee can, unassembled!!
Funny you guys mentioned what a pain they are to assemble. I have 4 of them. Took them all apart yesterday and today to install mini switches to turn the smoke units on and off. I feel like a pro now! LOL
you have more patience than I do!!
TRAIN NUT. how hard was it? I don't think I'm going to attempt it. I'm gonna try the magnet thing. I'm interested to see how it works. It's going to be the tree train this year. Party is here this year and those things seem like they're a dome a dozen. So I'm not going to worry as much about little fingers.

It's not too bad. It's a little tricky getting all the parts to line up. Especially the cross heads into the front pilot slide assemblies. Just loosen the screw on top of the boiler, and remove the two screws in the front pilot. Then lift the front pilot a little bit and slide it out. Not complex at all. Just a small headache!
I see ok. Well I still have time to see what I want to do
