I'll very likely be purchasing a Postwar Lionel 2151W set with the 2333 Santa Fe F3's on Friday. Everything appears to be in fairly amazing shape considering their age, however the locomotives are both missing their porthole plastic lenses. I know that's a common issue due to the initial porthole design that was later revised. Will the later style lenses work in these locomotives or should I replace them with the repro original style? I'm looking more for ruggedness than originality since I intend to run the set.

IMOP with as nice as those units look I would replace them with original portholes and keep them as original as possible. That is just my thoughts. I have a set of 2353’s since new and have thought about having them restored but then they would no longer be original.
Can anybody share what's involved with installing the original style? From the little bit I've been able to find online, they were a machine install from the factory.
I believe that a special tool was used to press them into place..........Paul 2
The reproduction porthole lens go for about $0.25 each and they aren’t yellow with age like salvaged originals. They simply press into place. Obviously, your choice.
IIRC the originals were like a plastic cone before the press in style came along? If you can locate those it would be great, do clear repro versions exist? If not the later style will have to do, they will look much better than old yellowed pieces. Very nice units you have and glad to hear you intend on running them. Enjoy!
I have to agree with Rick. I have purchased PW F3 A and B units with missing lenses, always replace with original PW as I have gotten them at train shows. Or, when I have had really messed up PW F3s repainted, I remove the original and keep in parts bin to use later in PW units in need.

I have eight original 2333 portholes with yellow tint from age, plus an original 2333 A unit Lionel box. Make me an offer. Don
