Pin goes through roof into hole in floor.

Just so you know, that part is readily available. Jeff Kane at the Train Tender has it. ttender.com

And so the pin keeps the mechanism from working to run it in a train.
so one removes the pin before setting it aside for action I presume?

If you decide to use a nail, I'd cut the sharp point off.

My grand daughter found the original pin, taped to the bottom of the platform!

Where can I find operating instructions and a parts list for this 6470 car?
