Looking for suggestions to remove tarnish, discolorations, etc. from postwar Lionel aluminum passenger cars. I want to get these cars to look as good as they run.

I have had really good success with a tootbrush sized wire brush from lowes. Go same direction as aluminum grooves. Be careful around th plastic ends and lettering. They will shine like new. My lowes has them in the paint section

20 plus years ago I used a good dish soap to clean them and then used Brasso to polish them and still looking pretty good today. Just be very careful and do not get to aggressive with the Brasso.
Lava hand soap and a tooth brush.
I use mothers mag and aluminum polish with a nice soft rag/towel. Works very well on these cars. They sell it at walmart
So were they not anodized when they were new? If so, the soap and water idea is the best. If not, I just found a can of Metal-All, used for those rare polished aircraft propellers, that works startlingly well - better than Mothers or California Purple.
