At a train meet, a vendor was selling a Lionel Postwar News Stand. The Man offered me the item lower than the price posted. He said that the accessory came with the original metal newspaper for the boy's right hand. The newsstand included the original box.

Regardless that I already own a newsstand, I regret passing on the item primarily due to the brown mold covering the box and the accessory.

The newsboy on my News Stand does not raise. Is there any way to make the arm operate? Because I was looking on YouTube and noticed a Newsboy with an operating right arm and waving a newspaper.

Last but not least, is there any method to clean brown mold from an accessory and a cardboard box?

The mold can be removed, but there's no guaranty that either the accessory or box will look in original condition afterwards.

I would start with a solution of water and a mild dishwashing detergent and put a dab or two on a paper towel and apply a small amount on the mold and let sit for a few seconds (more on the accessory and less on the box) and then gently wipe the mold off. Repeat as necessary.

If the mold is resistant to the dishwashing detergent, then mix up a solution of 80% water and 20% bleach and repeat.

Dab the accessory and box dry with a towel as soon as possible after the mold is removed. If the cardboard is still very wet, I would use a blow dryer on cool to dry it out to reduce the chance of it warping.

Thank you, Richie and Chuck. I appreciate the cleaning tips info and details about the NewsStand.

In my model, the newsboy contains internal parts. The parts consist of a horizontal lever-rod that engages the arm to move up and down. My thoughts are that the rod's tip, contacting a raised dimple in the sheet metal base, will activate the rod to move up and down, creating a waving arm—just a thought. And I thought that mine was damaged.
