Well, I think my PWC B-Unit has either blown a speaker or been fried.

It no longer makes Legacy Railsounds and comparing it's settings with my Southern B-Unit of the same brand/model which does work, they are configured the same.

Is there a visible way to know if a speaker is blown? Like a tear in the speaker paper?

The only sound it makes at any volume is a very low volume and subtle light, thin static that is barely noticed.

Have you checked the volume settings? If the volume knob is turned up, are you sure you didin't inadvertantly turn down the volume via the remote?

Try addressing the B unit itself and raising the volume with the remote.

There are two volume levels are powered legacy locos, not sure about unpowered B's but try both anyway:

AUX1 vol^, AUX1 vol^ AUX1 vol^.......

Or

AUX1 vol^,  vol^,  vol^vol^........

Got it fixed by using Gunrunner John's procedure:

STEP 1: Turn off power to track (and it doesn't hurt to wait a few seconds for the residual power in the electronics to drain).
STEP 2: Move switch on locomotive from RUN to PROGRAM.
STEP 3: Place locomotive on track, then turn on power to track.
STEP 4: Press “ENG” then input locomotive ID#. Press “SET”.
STEP 5: Press ”ENG” then input locomotive ID# again.
STEP 6: Press the “AUX 1” key, then press "6".
STEP 7: Turn off power to track, wait ten seconds.
STEP 8: Remove locomotive from track, move switch from PROGRAM to RUN.
STEP 9: Place locomotive back on track. Turn power on to track.
STEP 10: Press “ENG” and ID#, then operate as normal.
