Lionel rolling stock and Williams locomotives

Has anyone else ever experienced difficulties is having the knuckle couplers on Lionel cars meet & hook up with Williams locomotives? I think some years ago, I tried to do so with Williams passenger cars and a Lionel AA Alco Pennsy set of diesels.
