Does anyone know whether or not the arm is supposed to swing freely on the gateman figure? I can see that the arm is a separate piece, but I don't want to tug too hard and snap it off - it'd be a little hard finding a replacement 50 year old H0 part. Thanks.

I am using this instead of the 145 on my layout - it's actually much closer to 0 scale.
Regardless of whether it is supposed to swing, you write that yours does not.
If it was mine, I'd leave it alone.
As you wrote, parts for Lionel HO are almost impossible to find.
In fact, if someone knows a source for HO parts, I'd appreciate knowing about it.
A few items do show up on EBay, but not much at all.
