I got the Reading and Northern SD50 Superbass, my problem is the rear coupler is popping open. It opens as soon as the train starts moving. My question is can I just cut the wire to the coupler ? I dont really want to send it back to Nicholas Smith or Lionel for this. Thanks!

It depends if the fault is electrical or mechanical. If mechanical, cutting the wire will accomplish nothing.
I have had luck in the past calling lionel and getting them to mail me a coupler, rather than going through the trouble of shipping the whole thing round trip just to have coupler exchanged on their end. Worth a shot...
I would trace the coupler wire to the board and pull the plug.
