I just purchased a new Lionel SD40, 6-84264, Southern, Cab #3170.
The engine runs fine, running sounds and horn/bell work fine, couplers work, but there is a problem with the headlights.
The Southern engine correctly starts forward with long-nose going forward with the red marker lights on the rear turned on, however the "rear" headlight is also turned on instead of the "front" headlight. When you stop the engine and reverse the direction, the "front" red marker lights come on but also the "front" headlight comes on when the engine is moving in a reverse direction.
In other words, the headlight and the marker lights both come on at the same time on the front when the engine is in reverse and both headlights and marker lights on the rear end come on when the engine is going forward. What should happen - which ever end the headlight is turned on, the marker lights should be turned off with the marker lights on the other end turned on. I tried doing a engine reset but that didn't fix anything. When the engine starts up, the cab light is on, number board lights are on, but both headlights and all marker lights are turned off. Also when the engine stops, the cab light comes on, headlights and marker lights stay the way they were when running. If you hit the direction button, they switch (both to the other end), however when stopped, the headlight does dim like it is suppose to (Rule 17).
I am operating the engine in Legacy mode using a CAB-1L and a BASE-1L with smoke turned off and Legacy momentum set to 100 step - medium.
I also have another Southern SD40, 6-84265, Cab #3200 where the headlights and marker lights work correctly, so it is something specific to this specific engine.
I am guessing the wires from the headlights are incorrectly plugged into the control board (in other words swapped), however it is not obvious to me how to remove the shell. Where are the screws???
Thoughts or ideas?? Thanks...
