I went to run my lionel # 6-34598 powered a unit & the 6-34599 non powered unit ,i put the smoke on the powered unit & it worked fine ,then i put the smoke on the non powered unit & i got 3 blinking lights in the cab & the fan was making a noise ,so i opened it up & i put in a new fan motor ,now when i press the key on the legacy cab 2 to start the smoke unit it goes full power with just one press of the smoke key ,it got so hot that it melted the opening on the smoke funnel shut ,i know the voltage is to high but i don't see any voltage regulator wrapped in shrink wrap ,so i don't know what to look for ,is one of the boards fried ? ,if not what else can i look for as i have almost no knowledge of electronics ,the other question i have is when i took the smoke unit apart i unplugged the wire harness from the board {  the picture with the pencil pointing to it },what i forgot to do was to remember which slot the harness goes to ,there are 2 places that it could be plugged into ,i think where it is now plugged into the right one because if i put it in the other spot i get 3 blinking lights in the cab ,so can anyone tell me if i have the harness in the right spot & what do i do about the voltage problem ?   Please explain it if possible in the simplest terms & if possible with pictures would be a big help to me .  Thanks in advance .DSC02235DSC02236DSC02237

Ok i decided to give it 1 more try today ,as i said before the resister was burnt to a crisp ,so not knowing anything about the electronic boards the only thing left to do was put in a new resister & see what happens ,i did that & powered up the engine pressed the smoke key & so far everything seems to be working ok ,tried medium & high output & it to seems to be ok time will tell ,but i do have one question ,if when i first had the smoke unit apart & put in a new fan motor & then closed everything up what would happen if the resister touched the side of the smoke unit ,would that cause the resister to over heat & melt the funnel shut ? those were the only things did ,hope to learn from this with your help .
