Lionel smoke unit vintage 1987

I have one of the Lionel 1-8001 Rock Island 5100 4-8-4's. It is in great condition except for the smoke unit (PN 600-8100-060). This is a piston-driven, sealed (glued?) unit, with two exhaust tubes in addition to the stack. Has anyone had any experience rebuilding or replacing this unit? Lionel says this smoke unit is no longer available. Is there a substitute?
