Anyone know if there’s a pop-in board solution to give this engine even more creeping ability than it was originally capable of?

It is the cruise M board that could be swapped in for better slow speed control?

speed steps 1-3 are a bit too fast. If I can get it somewhere between where it begins moving now and where a typical legacy engine starts off, I’d be happy. What’s the easy solution that allows me to keep the existing sounds and everything else original?

Replacing the DCDS with a Cruise Commander M will certainly improve the low speed operation, I've done this upgrade for a number of folks. You can use the 100 speed step mode and get excellent low speed performance from the CC-M.
