I love Lionel but I'm not buying any more.  I think I'm U-boat jinxed. I bought two U-boats, separately, about four months apart.  Both had bad electronics boards - one went bad after 40 minutes of running and it was my fault but the repair got screwed up, the other was bad out of the box: I put a new board in that Lionel has sent me and it ran for only about ten minutes and failed again.  Maybe its just me or my layout, but no more U-boats.

While they ran, I thought they had the best diesel sound of any model loco I have ever heard.

This was one of my favorite pictures, taken during the few minutes the first one ran. Union Pacific Uboat meets UP U-boat.  Maybe my loco died out of embarrassment.

Fantastic picture, Lee! That's what I call a Yellow Submarine! Can you imagine a Heritage Series sub fleet?

"Is that a U boat?" I asked.

"Naw, that's-a-not-a my boat."

I used to track subs in the Navy, but never detected a Union Pacific U-30-C diesel!

I looked at the wrong number for the U.P. U-Boat.  They are STILL available at Charlie Ro's site for $275.  Looks like the other road names are there, too.

Apologies if someone got messed up with this...!

I have the one PARR one, so I got it's twin with a different number to run MU.  Legacy makes that easy to do, and it sure looks more impressive to see two engines at the head of a long train.

Hi Eric:

Lee Willis's experience notwithstanding, I bought one of these (at a slightly higher price from another big dealer) UP U-Boats and ran it about 5 hours before tearing myself away to go "home" to FL. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this guy ran around on my medium-sized layout (O-45, O-36). Great smoker, great sounds. Maybe I haven't run it enough to have it break.

Traveling to Boston next week on business, planning on visiting ... Uh oh, this could be trouble!

I don't have a link, but I can say for $275 this is one whopper of a good deal!   Name me one other brand new Legacy locomotive that's anywhere near this price!  I liked the PARR one enough to buy the matching unit, even though I already have one.

gunrunnerjohn-good move.  2 diesels are always better than one.  And three is divine.  Run the rear unit backwards in the mu and the decals may not bother you.  Till you figure it out of course.  I run lashups on almost all road runs.  Even diesels with the same sound boards have just enough difference in them to double the fun.  For a neophyte ferroequine audiophile like me.

Well, they only had two road numbers in the PARR, so that's all I got.   I do have two identical Legacy Conrail DASH-80's as well, they run nice in an MU consist.

Even if the sounds are identical, coming from two locomotives it's bound to sound quite different, and it does.

My Anniversary was this last weekend and I thought for sure I was going to get a coaling tower.  Instead I opened up UP 2918!    My beloved wife has done it again!  I ran it through it's paces and everything seems to work.  I did notice something odd that I need to check out but I think I have a winner!

Guys...  sometimes wives *DO* read our wish lists...
