Nick,

Hands down... THE nicest video I've seen thus far highlighting the Big Boy's features.  Still doesn't make me wanna go out and buy one though! (I'm saving up for a Y-6B double-header around mid-2015.)  Meanwhile,  I'll just play your video when I need a Big Boy "fix".

Super-fabulous layout setting for such a terrific locomotive... but it begs the question, "What curve radius do folks really need to NOT have the Big Boy boiler swing out so much???".

Thanks for sharing your video with us!!!

David

P.S.  Of course, as soon as I posted this... I also saw Chris Lord's Big Boy Sightings thread pop onto the "recent posts" column showing the Big Boy at the NJ High-Railers club.  Yet ANOTHER world-class video.  Amazing stuff!!!    Who needs to buy one when we have all these great videos now!!!

David,

No, no, no!  The Big Boy is much better in person.  You need to get one!

We had two BB's running at the TMB club Friday and with a Minimum 6 foot radius curve there was still overhang. Luckily we factored a BB and kept the distance between center rails on our curves at 5-1/2 inches.

Outstanding Nick,

Lionel should have you in their marketing department.

I thought the best scene was when the little girl, (your daughter?), leaned into the frame and appeared to be entering into a real life setting.  Reminded me of my parents taking me down to the rail yards in Pittsfield in 1947.

"What curve radius do folks really need to NOT have the Big Boy boiler swing out so much???"

Even with O240 curves there is noticeable overhang.

Nice video.  Minor touch-up:  at the end with the dual smoke note on the video, the word "dual" is incorrectly spelled "duel."  Although the MTH guys may think a gauntlet has been laid down with Lionel, I think the the point of the video was about the cool smoke feature.  ;-)  Since your video will likely get many hits on Youtube, something to clean up quickly.  Thank you for posting and sharing.

Great video. As a father of three boys, hearing your son in the background makes it all the more special. My oldest, just finished his first semester in college, came home last week for the holidays and was just spent from exams. On his first night back he slept in the basement with the trains running.

When I first got into the hobby, your early videos where very helpful to me, living in NYC, I loved the tags!

Happy New Year.

Chris, the Railroad CFO informed me that if I wanted to double-head Y-6B's, I could not get a Big Boy!!!    I suggested the Y-6b's would come out of next year's capital budget, but it didn't work.

David

Not that it matters cause its your railroad, but if I'm not mistaken Y6b's were primarily used as pushers, rarely doubleheaded if ever...

So now you've got a legitmate reason to buy the BB.

I'm sure the Y6b could push, but I can't imagine that being its primary mode of operation.

Truth be told, the Big Boy has never really called my name.  Given all the incarnations Lionel has offered over the years, I've yet to feel compelled to purchase one.  The Y6b on the other hand has always ranked high on my wish-list.  So it appears we're gonna stick to that plan.   Should be an impressive sight!
