Usually one every year. Most recent were the NYC Niagaras and Challengers...

Yes to the OP’s original question. When Ryan Kunkle spoke earlier this year at the TCA Museum event, he specifically mentioned a 2020 VL offering (the Challengers were already in the pipeline at that stage). I cannot recall any hint about what it might be, but in the same speech he made a point of saying that a VL model was planned before a possible 2021 new issue of the Acela to coincide with the real train’s retirement.
Before this, I would have said that VL engines came out on average once every two years. At the start of the VL line, I remember one year when there were two “Green Fleet” engines cataloged at the same time (GE Evo and UP Genset) and there may have been two steamers issued close together too. But that rate has not been maintained.
In case it matters, my vote is for a VL version of Lionel’s UP Veranda turbine but I have had no luck in persuading them to do that. 😪
new UP Veranda turbine would be fabulous!

A Vision HHP-8 would be great to go with the upcoming Acelas!

Me either... so I went out and got a tmcc one. I was told it would not be possible for a long time... that was several years ago... maybe new tooling cost would be needed?
I know back in about 2008 they were kicking the veranda idea around... and it kinda died out... dont know why...

Why not the new locomotive that will actually be pulling the new Acela?

That's more of an explanation than I have had but I can see one particular problem that might not be easy to resolve. The TMCC Veranda has a specific motherboard which I understand has the logic on it to control the two smoke and corresponding sound features that are one of this model's most distinctive things. The turbine smoke from the center smoke unit kicks in at about 15 scale mph (roughly) with the associated turbine sounds; diesel smoke from the rear unit operates at slow speed with diesel sounds.
I don't know enough about Legacy boards to judge whether they can produce the same or similar co-ordination but my guess is that they might be. If so, it's a different question whether Lionel would be prepared to adapt them/Legacy smoke units to operate in the way I've described.
It's interesting that a new issue of this model was considered in or around 2008. My memory is not totally reliable but I think that's after the point Lionel moved on from the modular boards.
I, along with may others in my area, would love a New Haven Jet EP-5! It has never been done by Lionel, in scale fashion, let alone legacy. they could do two paint scheme's New Haven and Penn Central black!

K-Line made a very good EP5 with cruise control and digital sound according to the box label; it is as good as (or maybe better than) a brass import.
This one has been converted to two-rail.

I can't imagine this to be any sort of an issue. The sounds are triggered by serial data, and current Legacy products synchronize multiple sounds with events, take the recent H-10 for example.
The chuffing, whistle steam, and swinging bell are all synchronized with the audio for this model.

Understood, so I imagine the hang up on Lionel's side is about something else - in the past I have thought maybe the tooling for the die cast body but if they were considering a reissue in 2008 that might not be the case.
It's also occurred to me that Lionel got burned on their VL Centipede offering so may be gun shy about another non-steam offering. Pity as the Veranda is a classic.
How about a vision line Little Joe?

Gosh, I have a Veranda, and I'd buy a Legacy model, it's that cool a locomotive!
I would think that the next offering would be a Diesel or electric since there has been multiple steamers done of recent.
I don't know if I would want an Amtrak ACS 64 loco. There isn't that much in detail in the loco and to pay a lot more money for a sounds system would be crazy. I see Gunrunner "John" brought up Acela but they are sleek and don't make much for sounds.

Most modern electric locos sound the same. There’s the sound of the traction motors powering up when they are leaving the station, there’s the *tick* sound (I don’t know the official name), they all have bells and horns (FRA Regulation), etc. The list could go on and on. Just because they are sleek doesn’t necessarily mean they are silent. An ACS64 sounds similar to an HHP, an HHP to an AEM7, and so on. Yes they may have minute differences in sound, but they are a very similar.
I would absolutely buy a VL Veranda.

I don’t think that guides Lionel’s policy; instead it’s what they think they can sell in volume, which usually means steamers. The original idea of the VL being highly innovative and extending to engines that had not previously been issued (hence new tooling) is no longer central as far as I can see.

Same here; I hope Lionel is listening!

True, but neither does the HHP-8. I simply brought up the ACS-64 in response to the comment about the HHP-8 in vision line for use with Acela. I don't think either is "interesting enough" to spend premium Vision Line bucks on. I have the Vision Line Genset, that one is cool in the fact they have three smoke units and manage them like the real Genset's three prime movers with sounds to match.
I keep saying I would love to get a Vision Line Engine, but I have not be able to come up with the funding to be able to pay for said vision line engine. Not saying I wouldn't dream of getting one, and perhaps someday in the more distant future I will be able to get one.

I agree with the what they think they can sell. I love steam and dislike Diesel, but one must remember that all their projects including VL especially are thought out some time ahead. I think Ryan had said that the Niagara's were a few years in the works. I guess we'll see what they come up with.
