I see there are lots of new Lionel engines (PE sets) forsale on Ebay! Will Lionel warranty those engines?

Not sure, but Lionel did allow me to register and get support for my Legacy base and remote I bought off eBay.
only if its a authorized dealer
I believe only if they are an authorized dealer not an individual.
No! Dealer sales only so if they are a dealer and the item is less than 3 years old it has warranty and you need a reciept!

Besides the individual seller, there are "sellers", who, somehow obtain "new" Lionel sets to resell. Some of this merchandise are factory rejects, repaired items or overstocks. Lionel will not and should not warranty this junk. If you want the items to carry a full warranty, buy from a reputable factory authorized dealer.

I would certainly hope it requires a new item sale from (1) an authorized dealer, and (2) a receipt for the sale. Otherwise their warranty program would rather quickly be a shambles.
Do a search on Lionels website to see if the ebay dealer is an authorized dealer.Items from an authorized dealer are covered by Lionels warranty.
One ebay seller who often has those sets is "mariostrains".(not to be confused with mariotrains) "mariostrains" is an authorized Lionel dealer, and a reputable ebay seller.
Heres his listing on Lionels authorized dealer section of Lionels website:

This is a great deal from mariostrains on these sets,*free shipping and extra track* and he offers a 14 day return policy as well:

RickO, you must be reading my mind--I was looking at the ads you mentioned and then wanted the warranty issued cleared up before buying. Thanks everyone for your input! Don

I have purchased numerous items from them including my legacy V1-4. It was no problem when I registered it with Lionel. IMO it's a good place to purchase.
