Lobaugh 2-8-4 tender, some type of switch mounted on front, is this standard equipment? What does it do? Engine has a DC motor, not a wound field.

The switch is for the head light or the rear light. Pends on witch way it is moved.

The kits came with AC/DC motors. If you used them without a rectifier or an E Unit, that switch was for reversing. Few had tender lights. Not sure a tender light was part of the kit. I think I can check . . .
Old bill is correct. That is a headlight/tender light control. In the factory built versions the tenders has factory installed back-up headlights.
Chuck and Bill are correct. Switch 663 is a headlight switch; 664 is a reversing switch. The one shown above is 663. Both are now obsolete.
