Excuse me if this isn't in the right subforum; I don't know what category Lionel SuperStreets falls under.

I don't own any Lionel SuperStreets segments or cars that operate on it, but they look like the same gauge as generic O Scale track and include the central third rail. If I were to run an MTH RailKing Imperial ES44AC on a straight segment of Lionel SuperStreets (obviously can't do curves because the radius is too tight; it would fly off the track immediately), would it operate?

I'm just curious, because it would be interesting seeing a road car on railway tracks and a locomotive on the street waiting for the car to pass.

I think it can be done. Trolleys that use the same electrical pickup method as the ES44AC (pickup rollers, obviously) work fine on SuperStreets from what I've seen. Lee Willis was also able to run RMT BANGs on it. One issue I foresee, however, is whether or not you run conventional control and/or plan to operate cars along the same segment of track that the train will be running on. If you're running command control, then you may have to perform minor alterations to any crossover tracks to electrically isolate your loops, since command control trains run at a constant 18 volts. If you run conventional, it shouldn't be as big an issue, but if you plan to run cars on the same track/lane as the train, you may want to electrically isolate the street running so as to allow your Superstreets cars (if you have any) to run at reasonable speeds.

Obviously, if you don't plant to acquire any Superstreets cars, these are nonissues. I believe electrical pickup will be fine.

I believe Lionel actually made an O gauge track to SuperStreets adapter piece in the last couple years of the K-Line by Lionel production, so this would lead me to believe that it's possible to run a train on SuperStreets. Always thought it would be an easy way to make a "street running" segment.

They made both a tubular transition piece as well as a Fastrak one.

You could likely get a Plymouth switcher, 520 boxcar, or even a gang car to take some of the curves too. Even an 0-4-0 in steam might be sketchy though,... What is it 15"?; that's about the min for steam and sketchy at that.

There are quite a few old threads on the subject of SS. It's been a while since someone's showed theirs off though.
