This video shows my Long Island Railroad G-5s 4-6-0 steam locomotive #21 – the Sunrise Special - running at 70 miles-per-hour and pulling three passenger cars on my 12’-by-8’ layout. The engine is an MTH Premier model (20-3068-1) with PS2 that was released in 2001. The passenger cars were made by K-Line around the same time. I don’t think these passenger cars ran in the Dashing Dan blue/light blue color scheme until after steam ended on the LIRR. Nonetheless, I’ve run this train on my layout for many years. I like the steam sounds of the MTH Premier G-5s, especially when it’s running fast, and that’s how I run it on my layout. The G-5s engines did run at high speeds on the straight stretches of the east end of the LIRR.

Very colorful cars, Mel. And the sound running fast add a lot of interest. All that’s missing is the whistle

Apples55,

If a person making a video on a cellphone (me) has the usual two hands and no one else to assist, it is impossible to blow the whistle while recording... But, the terrific steam whistle is one of the reasons that I like this engine so much.

Following up my LIRR G-5s video, this video shows my Pennsylvania Railroad G-5s 4-6-0 steam locomotive #5740 running at 70 miles-per-hour and pulling two Long Island Railroad heavyweight passenger cars on my 12’-by-8’ layout. The engine is an MTH Premier model (20-3031-1) with PS1 that was released in 1999. The passenger cars are also by MTH. The sounds of this PS1 engine are very good when running at high speed but not quite as good as the PS2 version. The full-sized PRR G-5s #5741 (not #5740) did run on the LIRR in PRR livery.

@MELGAR Love the pics and videos of your layouts, thank you for sharing. I saw your 10x5 layout in O Gauge Railroading magazine a couple of years back. Was the 12X8 featured at some point as well? Starting a 12'X9' O gauge layout and would love to read more about your 12X8.

Fireball RR,

Thanks. I was a professional engineer for almost five decades. But these two model railroads have given me the most satisfaction of anything I've ever done and I'm grateful to OGR Magazine for having published articles about them.

An article about the 12'-by-8' layout was published in the April/May 2006 issue of OGR Magazine Run 214 (Volume 19 - Issue 6).

The article about the 10'-by-5' layout was published in the February/March 2019 issue of OGR Magazine Run 304 (Volume 49 - Issue 2).

I'm also attaching a more recent video of my MTH Premier PRR G-5s #5740 4-6-0 Ten-Wheeler steam locomotive model (with PS1) running on the 12'-by-8' layout. At one time, PRR G-5s #5741 was leased to the Long Island Rail Road. The numbers are close enough for me.
