I think Jim Barrett in one of his back shop sections had a fix for this.  I remember it involved removing a screw directly under each controller, then inserting an eraser from a pencil and then inserting a spring (from a pen?) and replacing the screw.  This caused tension on the control handle and kept it in place.  That is the gist of it but do not remember anything else.  I do remember he cautioned that doing so might void the warranty but it is probably long out of warranty by now.
