I was just looking through an old Lionel catalog in my basement and happened across a post card from this magnificent layout. My father took our family there a few times in the early 1980's and I would dream of having a layout like that one day. I can remember Neil Diamond's "Coming to America" playing while watching the trains. What fond memories. We got this post card as a souvenir. Anyone else visit this layout while it was open?

I grew up in Morristown, about five miles from Madison. I heard of Bill Hopping's layout, but I never got around to visiting it. If you run a google search of "Bill Hopping" "Madison" and "trains," you should be able to come up with more information. The local newspapers ran stories about this layout right before Christmas every couple of years, and OGR's competitor may have done an article on this layout 30 or so years ago. .
We visited the layout when we lived in Jersey.
It was an interesting visit. The owner ran his open house like a show, music, lights, choreographed train appearances. A fond memory.
Fred Rominski [may God bless his soul] of the Raritain Valley Hi-Railers and formerly the old Millburn Train and Hobby store did many of the custom painted postwar pieces. IDK what happened to Freds collection after his passing. Fred had in his display case the NJ dot passenger set from the Madison Central.
I believe OGR did a cover spread with a nice article on the layout.....I'm going to see if I can locate the issue......

I think the 1st issue I received as a print subscriber was Run 98............this is a great reason to be a digital subscriber!

I went to Mr. Hopping's layout several times in the 80's. The last time was the January just before he tragically killed himself. He was a super nice man.
