I picked up this partial McCoy Cascade at the TCADD "Turkey Meet" in Phoenix last weekend. It has the shell, the two swiveling frames for the motors and trucks, the end platforms, the wiring for the lights, and most of the decoration. It is missing both motors, probably some sort of motor mount that fits on top of the motors. the pantographs and mounts, the reverse switch, the headlight housings, and a decorative horn.

My questions are:

What does the motor mount look like? The pivoting frames obviously mount the motors from the top, but there are no mounting holes to match the holes in the upper corners of a McCoy motor, so there must be some kind of intermediate mount. Would this be the same as what Lionel used in the 402/408? I've never seen one of those apart so I don't know what the motor mounts look like on those.

Any suggestions on where I might pick up the necessary parts to complete this thing? It doesn't look like Lionel pans from a 381E would work, although I can't be sure without having the platform. The pans bolt to a platform mounted to the top of the shell. I imagine Super Motors would drop right in if I can't find a pair of McCoy motors, or maybe I could even adapt Bild-a-Loco motors or those old Williams twin can motor units.

Any help will be most welcome.

Parts like the pantographs, switch, and so on, are readily available from Bob Jr. and Bonnie McCoy.

The McCoy motors have a bracket that hangs from the top center, similar to the 408, but not the same.  I would start by asking Bonnie, but I would also imagine it would not take too much ingenuity to hang a couple of Build-a-motors in there.

Nice find.  Worth working on, the McCoy E2 pulls like nothing else.

Thanks guys. I have one of the Williams dual can motor drives and they come up once in a while on the Bay, so that's a live power option. I'll have to take the thing apart and get a closer look at the area where the motor mount connects to the frame to see what might or might not fit. I think I also have an extra Super Motor and a BAL around somewhere, but no two of anything.

Hojack, thanks for mentioning Bob McCoy. I'd forgotten that he still deals in parts. I have his e-mail address around somewhere; I'll check and see what he can provide.

Nice find. One of my favorite STD ga engines. Mine pulls my McCoy circus train. Re-wheeled and new side journal castings with genuine McCoy parts from Bob and Bonnie.

I think a late model supermotor with the 402 / 408 mounting bracket installed would be a drop in fit for potential motors.

Good luck in getting it running!

Regards,

SWHi, sorry for the delay.  Without disassembling the locomotive, which I am reluctant to do, it is pretty hard to see up inside to figure out the connection.  These photos are the best I could do - stuck a penlight up inside, that's the light you're seeing in there.

Click on the photos to enlarge and see detail.

The schematic is only my interpretation of what is going on in there - along with being a key to the green letter points on the photos.  Both spacers - "B" and "E" seem to be cylindrical, each with a kind of bottom flange.  "F" is the ends of the flange of black spacer "E", where it sits in a slot in the motor frame "G" - similar to the 408 motor hanger.

The motor in its motor frame appears to swivel and hang loosely from a center point.  Hypothesize a bolt running down through the center: from the shell bracket, through both cylindrical spacers.  The shell bracket appears to be spot welded to the inside of the cab - without the motors in place it should be readily visible in yours.

Not sure if this helps.  Would be better if you had one nearby to look at.
