Mr. Kirkman: First you might search the word "McKeen" on this site, and you will see that many of us are interested in the McKeens, and disappointed when the McKeen

prototype shown at York by MTH did not materialize.  I was approached by people

in the Nevada RR Musum in Carson City, who were hunting a power truck for their now

restored and running McKeen. (I had no good leads, and do not suppose you have

anything that could have aided that restoration?)

I have not searched "McKeen" On this site, however I have read a few about the McKeen Cars. I would also like to know why the N.S.R.M. would want to to you?

They have just about finished the restoration on the McKeen car so I don't think I can help.

Hi Madison

Hi Guys

I'm new to 0 scale... signed up and enjoying the topics. Sadly one of my good friends passed away some months back and in his train collection we found what appears to be a McKeen '0' scale model. I don't know much about it and on behalf of his widow would like to research the model and look at disposal options.

It appears to be 2-rail, and of brass construction. Could be a production model 1950-60's or maybe scratch built? Not sure if US or Australian origin. I'll see if I can upload some images.

Cheers guys

That's pretty cool.  By the way it is constructed, I would say it is homemade, but then again, I am new to model construction.  There is a hole in front of the front truck were a radiator would go.  Otherwise it looks pretty complete, and without the pick-ups, I think it's to rail two.

Looks to be 2-rail DC unit and perhaps even a Kidder import.  Not sure if that's the original motor or a custom re-motoring job of a Kidder unit, but the side frames look reasonably correct along with the clutch unit.  Nice!

Have you tried to test it out to see how it runs?

I thought Kidder only made H.O. McKeen Cars  I could be wrong though.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I think Kidder in old magazines advertised

an O scale McKeen, and that, maybe 20 years ago, I bid on one and lost at an

auction run by the auction house in NW Indiana, when they used to hold auctions in

Indianapolis, at a church facility and then at a National Guard facility on the south side of Indy.   I would have to go root through old paper to verify that...Stout!!.... couldn't think of it.

The only reason the museum asked me about parts for a McKeen, years ago, was that

I walked in, commented on theirs, and mentioned that I was familar with the history

of one that used to run outside Toledo, was used as a diner, and destroyed in a fire.

Unfortunately, that was all I knew about that one, and a very brief time spent in the

area did not scare up more info.  I have been lusting after one for a very long time.

No.  They did the McKeen cars in OH, S, and O.  The S and O scale ones had working centrifugal clutches in the drives.  I've only ever seen one O scale one over the past decade; lots of the PSC imports in the meantime.

I have seen an ad for an O scale Ken Kidder McKeen in my pile of old MR's and RMC's

that have plans of all the neat stuff I should only live long enough to build, but I can

only find a Nov. 1956 MR with a Ken Kidder ad on P. 78 for an HO McKeen today.  I

did run across another Kidder ad for a lot of O scale traction equipment, and several

ads for HO and HOn3 Kidder steam dummies.  Ain't it amazin' but decidedly unfunny

what you USED to be able to get?

Hi everyone

Many thanks for all your help. Researching this rare McKeen rail-motor example has been very interesting, especially the Australian connection. Lots of images and prototype versions have come to light!
For your information… On behalf of my friend's widow I have taken on the task of selling the McKeen rail motor for her on Ebay. Lots of interest, hope we get an offer this week.
Regards
David
