I have just purchased a lionel Meadow River Lumber Shay #1, lionel #6-11364, on the lionel web site it list a flickering fire box in the cab, however i don't see any flickering fire box,is there something i am suppose to do to turn it on?,the manual doesn't say anything about a flickering box,i am at a loss as what to do next, any help is appreciated.

Gerald,
I just checked mine and no glow. In fact, looking at the cab, you really can't see the firebox area at all. It's most likely just a cut and paste error in the text of the description.

Jim,your right you can't see the fire box at all but i really like the engine and the only problem is pulling cars around on o36 curves they derail,i was reading some other posts about this problem, but i am afraid that to do the fix for this problem such as drilling holes & using taps to make threads is beyound my abilities. The only other thing i can do is cut off the steps so the coupler can swing around enough so the cars don't derail,& i don't see myself doing that, maybe someone will come up with a fix that is within my abilities,so in the meantime ,i will just run the engine around the layout without any cars behind it.
All of us who bought the Legacy Shay (which uses the former K-Line tooling) have the same problem. I actually located and recently bought a K-Line Shay with TMCC so I could get the extension piece that allows it to operate on tighter curves. I haven't had a chance to "play" with it yet, but am going to see if I can find someone who can/will fabricate this piece so I can fit one on the Lionel model. Will keep folks posted on the success, or lack thereof.
Allan, i hope you find an easy way to fix this i will be watching for your response, keep us posted.
Steamtown two weeks ago, could use some work.

These threads might help, I documented the problem last year, dealt with Lionel who will do nothing to rectify the error, in fact they advertised the Shay's as 031 again this year although they were WELL aware of the derailing problem. I even tried to find someone to make the bracket but have come up with no takers. I have the K-Line bracket so mine does pull on 031 fine now. Check out these threads and they might give you some ideas. Hit my email if you want more info. As to drilling the 2 holes necessary it is very easy to do. I did it with my 1/4" hand drill and just used 2 self tapping screws to hold it.

Alan I hope that you can find someone to make the bracket. I believe that a plastic version would work fine, I had no success locating anyone that could make it at a reasonable price.
I tied the lead log car to the loco with a small piece of black twist-tie and unless you look very closely it is not really noticeable.
This is not an ideal fix, of course, but it works fine, looks decent, and now I can run a train on 036 Fastrack, which is what really matters to me.
I just had to try what Dave Warburton said about using a plastic tie to connect the engine with the log car & it did work, there was a problem when going in reverse it would derail, maybe a stiffer wire would work better,it may not be the best solution but it can a good temporary fix. by the way, i don't have any log cars i just used regular box cars.
Allen Miller, if you can get some pictures and maybe a ruler with the pics I can make 1 (or several), If K-line made this I bet I can come up with a comparable piece. E-mail in profile.

Hi Gerald,
The same thing happened to me with the Lionel GS-2, It said fire box glow and it didn't have it. So what I did was added my own, it's fairly easy to do if you want to do this it would be my pleasure to help you out. Check out the link below.
Thanks, Alex

Hi ALEX,i appreciate your offer to help me,i will surely give it some serious thought, although i am not very good at opening up steam engines i fear that i will create more problems than i already have ,but i will think about it. Alex,i believe you live in Staten Island,i live in Bayonne we live very close to each other,i will be in touch if i need your help. Thanks Again, Gerald
After reading a few posts and viewing a handful of pics I believe the bracket is a piece if cake, the coupler post might be an issue but manageable. So the real problem with the adapter is fitting it to a specific engine (different make or models) which require mods to the shell mount/plate or chasse/frame. If I had one to blue print I could make one but whomever installs it will need to do the mods to the engine in order for it to work.
Another route would be to make an adapter that mounts to the coupler mount with lateral stop to prevent swiveling, that would move the pivot point of the coupler out past the radial interference of the steps. This would not require mods to the engine frame/chasse.

Hi Gerald,
That's great I didn't realize we live so close to each other. Bayonne is under 30 minutes away from me. If you ever decide to add the fire box glow, you can come over and we can do it together.
Thanks,
Alex

I have an extra one hit my email and let see if we can get this made.
Well i did some more testing with my new shay engine, i had mentioned earlier that the cars would derail going around 036 curves, well when i did that test i was coming off an 036 switch, however it then went over a lift out section & into a curve that i had cut to so i could complete the turn on this part of my layout so it wasn't a true 036 curve,i have no clue as to what this curve is. Anyway, today i decided to try something different,so i went to an 036 loop on my layout where i had the polar express set running & i took the polar express engine off & replaced it with the shay,i started the engine & off it went around the 036 loop without any problems. Next i decided to try my 18" aluminum santa fe passenger cars with the shay on the same 036 loop, well it also went around with noproblems,i have to mention that the 18" cars do have a bigger swing ( swing isn't the word wanted to use but i could not thin of what else to use) which is probably why it did not derail, any way it does work on 036 curves,i will continue to check & see if there are any other exceptions i wanted to post what i have observed so far,i will keep updated as to what else i find out.
