It was recently announced that the New Haven Line of Metro-North from the Bronx/Westchester border of New York to New Haven, New Cannan, and Danbury CT. is the busiest rail line in the U.S. in terms of the number of trains operated by both Metro-North and Amtrak.

Amtrak operates on this line between New Rochelle, NY and New Haven, CT. and then on to Penn Station in New York City and Boston and Springfield, MA.

I counted all of the Metro-North Trains in their timetable listed for a weekday and the total is 227 trains. The Amtrak timetable lists 44 trains each weekday between New York City and Boston and Springfield, MA.

That total is 271 trains each week day but then add in non revenue train moves and a the daily stone carrying train with 40 to 60 hopper cars and the total can add up to 290 trains.

I would have thought that The Northeast Corridor between Penn Station in New York City and Trenton, NJ would be the busiest piece of railroad but according to The
Federal Railroad Administration The New Haven Line of Metro-North has more trains
operating on any given weekday. There are more Amtrak Trains that operate from
Penn Station in New York City going south but there are fewer New Jersey Transit trains on the same route that what Metro-North operates on the New Haven Line plus what Amtrak operates on this line. This information was announced by Metro-North two weeks ago.

If one wants to compare timetables of these routes for the number of trains that operate on them please do and post the information on the forum.

As to the same old stuff the operates on the New Haven Line here is a list of
what operates here.

A total of 224 Metro-North trains each week day.

MU equipment:

M-2s, M-4s, M-6s, and now the new M-8s that will during the next 2 years will
replace all to the older M series cars. The new M-8 cars are really sharp looking inside and out and cost 3 million dollars for each pair of 2 cars.

Diesel operated trains:

There are presently 8 sets of Metro-North Genesis hauled trains with 7 coaches in a push-pull operation each week day.

Amtrak: A total of 44 Amtrak trains each week day.

AEM7 and HHP8 electric locomotives pulling between 5 and 9 Amfleet cars each.

Acela train sets.

There are several sets of Metro-North work train equipment that operates to inspect and services the tracks and roadbed and also another work train that operates to inspect and service the overhead wires that powers the electric mu cars.

CSX operates a local freight train once or twice a week to service two customers on the line.

The stone train has been suspended for the winter months.

What line has more trains with this variety of equipment?
