I recently purchased 2 different cars. I assume these are not prototypes but rather some home made cars with different designs to boost someones rolling stock. They are well made and appear to be a metal side applied over an existing Lionel car. Has anyone out there seen a similar type of car before? Do you recognize the layout of the windows/ doors from some kit that has been used to create these? They are interesting

Those are pretty cool. I wonder if the metal side overlays are from old wooden kits? It was a popular technique back in the day to emboss the sides and the ends and make the rest of the kit from wood.
Maybe someone had these sides and applied them to the Lionel cars.
The sides appear to be old Walthers tin sides from their kits. The level of detail and the rivet spacing seems about right. It appears they have been laminated over or have replaced the sides of the MPC era heavyweight passenger cars?
