I have an REA express reefer running behind my 783 NYC J3, followed by an RPO car, a combine and a coach.  The rationale is that it's a short, fast mail train that the Central augmented with a bit of express business and some passenger revenue.

It works out well on my small layout, where there's no room for long passenger trains.

Great photo, Bob!  Do you know where that was taken?  Also, when?  I understand that there are examples of all three styles of Milw Rd combines still in existence, but maybe not all restored.

I've tried to get Weaver to do one of them for a couple of years, now, but Joe is afraid of the rather limited potential market.  The cars would have to cost over $300 bucks, each, if they were done today.  I'd be willing to go for one, but the question is:  How many others would, too.

It's in the Mendota Rail Museum, which I think is somewhere in Wisconsin. I'd spend the 300 bucks for a Weaver model, especially the ribbed version in the photo, but Joe is right to be a bit nervous about being able to sell out a production run for that kind of money. He did well with the cabooses, but the branch line combine is really a niche item. I'd love to see a peekaboo gondola, too, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.
