I have a 3rd Rail steamer that, if possible, I'd like to upgrade with the single board RailSounds Commander (see below) in place of the stock RS4 audio/power boards. This engine is about 9 years old and has what is labelled a Cruise Commander v. 4.5 with a chip on the board also labelled "CR-7.0" and copyright ERR. The radio board is a 691-R2LC-C.

I have used this current version of the RS Commander before but only to put sound in a diesel dummy unit:

What I would like to know is whether this board will work with the Cruise Commander version I have? In other words, is this a straightforward upgrade or am I really forced to change to a newer version of the Cruise Commander as well?

It should work. First place you might only have to replace the radio board, not the whole Cruise Commander. It should have come with a  ver C08. If you are missing some sounds like crew talk then you can get an R2LC Ver C08 from Lionel. 20 bucks during the half price sale.

Pete

Thanks Pete. I think that I probably have a C08 radio board in my spares. The stock radio board seems to be labelled "08Z" which I have not seen in any other engine.
