I am wondering if anyone knows what the car sides of the OO passenger car might be? Posting here because I think most might see this.

At first I thought it would be sheet steel like old Walthers passenger cars were made of. Its quite thin and the detail is embossed on it, quite fine in fact. I tried to cut the roof off so I could strip the paint off and replace the window material.

It appears to be fibrous like very dense cardboard. I after realizing I wasn't going to get the roof off without destroying it I tried to remove the decal with Micro Sol. This started to remove the paint and exposed more of the material.

I have heard of Strathmore board and even have some in thicker plain sheets for scratch building structures but never saw anything this thin (~1/32") that could be embossed like this.

BTW I have a few Scalecraft cars with metal sides. This car did not come with a box so I have no idea who made it.

I was able to safely strip this car. I placed it in a beaker of acetone and let it soak. Pretty happy with the results. No damage to the bristol board and didn't raise the grain on the wood. It even disolved the glue, whatever was used here.

Impressive result!  I'll have to consider acetone for such cars in the future.
