I really like traction tires! Some trains, such as the President's Special, take a lot of pulling. I have a 390 and a 392 with PS2 (I added the PS2) but no traction tires. If the engine loses traction, somehow the system learns bad behaviors and jerks at low speeds. Reloading the sound file fixes that problem. I have tried non-slip stuff on the wheels - this works but wears off. It seems that I could modify the wheels for traction tires by removing the tread and cutting (or grinding) off the width of a traction tire. Original traction tire wheels have three little studs to hold the thinner tread, but I could glue the modified tread to the wheel. Any reason this wouldn't work? The worst that could happen is that I ruin some wheels.

Frank Timko modified the wheels on several of my postwar diesels and Berkshires for traction tires. Maybe he can do it for Standard gauge wheels also.
I just glue the traction tire to the existing wheel. I've not had one fall off yet.

Thanks for the replies! What type of glue did you use?

The more recent MTH remakes use a traction tire (a modern 400E was pulling 65 200 series cars for hours on the SGMA layout). Might be able to buy the modified wheel from them at York. Steve's solution sounds a lot easier though.

Steve, what is the make/part number/source of the traction tire you are using? Thanks!

Owen, I do not know the part number, but the one I use the most is the extra one MTH supplieswith the 384's. It takes some stretching, but the tight fit helps.

Thanks for info. I found a MTH tire chart - gonna try to locate their #DE-0000057. It's 57m/m od; the CMC box cab electric wheels measure 59.5m/m od. Probably the same tire you are using. I'll advise the outcome.
I carefully removed the wheel treads and ground them to the proper depth. The modification worked great and the traction tires are installed. I also have questions on replacement traction tires since I need two or three more sets. MTH lists DE-0000040 for Std gauge (40mm x 4mm). I don't see these in stock anywhere. DE-0000031 is almost the same size (38.6mm x 3.5 mm) costs only $1 instead of $3 and is in stock. Anyone know if DE-0000031 would work?

After looking at the traction tire chart more carefully, I see that DE-0000031 is too small. DE-0000036 or DE-0000041 might work, but I don't know if they are any easier to find than the correct part DE-0000040.
