Modifying the Lionel 6-9367 UP tankcar

This Lionel car was issued as part of the Famous American Railroad Series #2.  Built date is 1-80.

The model was modified by replacing the plastic trucks with metal sprung trucks. The steps were also modified as shown.

Very good. If a car has plastic trucks, the single best thing to do as a first step is to replace them with diecast sprung ones. Your added detail on the steps, and warning placards, are nice as well.

There was another thread a few days ago, talking about these and other tankers. As was discussed there, these Lionel tankers are fully scale-sized 8000 gal. tankers, and are well enough detailed to fit right in with scale trains as well as traditional ones. These Lionel tank cars are an interesting and colorful group of cars. I have about 20 of them in my collection - always liked them.

These were notorious for that sticker to curl up around the edges. I looked for a replacement decal but was unable to find the correct size. So, I carefully removed the stickers with mineral spirits. Cleaned all the surfaces and taped them to a 1/2" pipe and applied a bit of heat. That caused the sticker to conform to the concave body. Reglued them to the car and so far they look ok.
