I had been greasing my Polar Express ' gearbox and I ran short of the grease.

I found the red colored synthetic MTH grease seems to work well.  I bought it in a kit with track cleaner and light oil .   I'd like to find the grease in a larger tube than the tiny one that comes with the kit and not have to buy the other two products.  Any idea what might work well if this synthetic grease isn't available from MTH ?

Lucas Oil "Red-N-Tacky", which can be purchased in most any Auto Parts Stores.

If I might piggy-back off this topic: What are your recommendations for how much grease one should put in the gearbox?

I ask because I recently cracked open an MTH motor to check the grease and the worm was absolutely swimming in grease. It seemed excessive (to my eye) but my knowledge is on this is lacking.

How much is too much grease in the gearbox?

Thanks in advance.

HEY  OG ,

I opened up the Polar Express  ( two years old now and only a little running at Christmas time ) and found almost no grease at all on the worm gear assembly.  I did apply a generous amount of the aforementioned MTH grease in the housing.

On the 17 MTH steamers and diesels that I have opened for inspection , I too have found the gear box to be " swimming in grease ".   I don't know if it would hurt anything as long as it would not be squirting out of the axle openings on the driver wheels.  It never seemed to be an issue on the MTH engines.j

GOOD luck and thanks for the reply.
