Hello all,

I recently just picked up a couple of MRC AC Sounder boards that I plan on installing into my K-Line and Williams Engines.  I have tested the units and they respond and work wonderfully; however, as many people whom have bought this board know, the speaker they provide is for lack of a better term, rubbish.  I plan on investigating the case of providing a baffle to attenuate the bass and making the sound a bit louder.  Has anyone had any success doing this?  Just curious to see what baffle designs people have tried.

I am also going to wire the sounder board to a larger speaker and compare the two sound wise.  Obviously, the larger speaker would probably prevail, but this is for future moves just in case I want to install these on more engines and have to choose between either a larger speaker, or a baffle.  I will attach a video to my experiment after it is complete.  Are there any other good sound boards out there?  I'd appreciate some feedback on experience with different kinds and the pros and cons.

On a side note, the first one I received (Which I sent back promptly) had an LT amplifier chip that had demounted from the PCBA.  I did not want to solder it back on, so I sent it back.  This was before I even opened the package.  Has anyone had any issues with longevity of these boards?

James

You will certainly want to use both a better speaker and the baffle.  The baffle will sound MUCH louder than the bare speaker.  You can actually get surprisingly loud sound from a very small speaker with the proper baffle.  Here's a speaker that I chopped out of a laptop, the volume is amazing for the size.  This is obviously a well engineered enclosure, I noticed that it was even ported, and closing the port really impacted the sound.

I have several of these AC sounders. Just taping together a simple baffle made from cardboard makes a huge difference with the included speaker. On another Williams engine, it achieved decent volume with the speaker originally included with the Trueblast system. On another engine I got really fancy and installed an amplifier powered by a voltage regulator. Then it really cranked out the sound.
