Hi, I was given a 2.10 version remote. I have version 4.20 tiu can I use the remote with out updating it? No one around me has cables I need to upgrade the remote. Have ordered them but was just wondering, don't want to screw anything up.

I don't think the outdated software could damage anything. Do be aware that when the remote is upgraded from a version 2.#, a reset will be needed and you will lose all locos, switches, etc. that are in it
If you want to use that remote as-is, it will only work properly with a TIU that also has DCS 2.10 software. Otherwise, you will have big problems since the remote and TIU storage allocations changed considerably after DCS 2.10.
Regardless, DCS 2.10 is ancient. It lacks many DCS features of later DCS releases and has any number of bugs that have been corrected over the 13 or 14 years since DCS 2.10 was current.

Yes, your remote is upgradeable to the latest software, DCS 5.0.

It will do odd things if it works at all.
Let me rephrase that. If it works at all, it will be prone to errors and will be very unpredictable..
DCS 2.1 is incompatible with anything later.

It can be easily upgraded to the current version of DCS, why should it be a paperweight? How about I send you a proper paperweight and you send me the remote, I'll make better use of it. 
Well according to Barry 2.1 is incompatible with anything newer. Guess I didn't understand.
SO thereis no misunderstanding: Any DCS remote and any DCS TIU, regardless of vintage, is upgradable to the latest software, and as far as I know, will provide all features which are available in a particular loco. I have original issue equipment running 5.0

I've upgraded both TIU's and Remotes that had 2.10, they required a factory reset, but they work fine with the new software.
