Guys,  I just purchased 5" sections for my layout and see that they have split rails with wire tabs under with wires attached to complete the circuit.  I just wondered the purpose MTH had for these?  is this for operating signal crossings where you split the outside power of the rail to trip the crossing?  I just wondered about these because I bought them to just complete track layout designs.

thanks

Chris

Assuming you are talking about RealTrax, You are correct, they sell 2 different 5" sections, the ones you got are intended for isolating track sections. The others do not have the rails cut. I only have the uncut versions, I just put a piece of electrical tape on the contacts and between rail ends for my Isolation.

Looking in the latest catalog, they list the Cut ones as 10" but the picture shows a 5" length judging by the tie count (6 ties, 3 under each end of the cut rail). It is also more than twice the cost of the standard piece.

thanks guys. I figured that is what its for.  so can you use these for activating devices for crossing signals?  so when the wheels hit the side, that powers that piece and then powers the crossing signal?  not sure with these as I just converted to teh MTH realtrax from tubular lionel.  I dont have the MTH crossings yet either.
