I have the Amtrak AEM7 from the very first run of MTH AEM7s  and so it is equipped with the original Protosounds system. The model’s detail work is fine and accurate; however, many of the separately applied parts are plastic and fragile so use care when handling the locomotive. The only cosmetic quibble I have, and it’s a minor one at that, pertains to the paint. My model is decorated in Amtrak’s Phase III paint and the blue appears to be just ever so slightly too dark. Even though subsequent AEM7s were released with Protosounds 2, MTH captured the sounds of the AEM7 extremely well on the Proto 1 recording and I’m very satisfied with it. The horn, bell and blower sounds are all true to the prototype. The model features an impressive light package with illuminated number boards, class lights and flashing strobes. Again, my model is equipped with Proto sounds 1 model so someone who has a later version will need to comment regarding the operating characteristics of subsequent models. Pulling power is good for a small model. I use mine to power a train consisting of seven 70' aluminum cars and it does well.

Yes, the locomotive is restricted in the curvature it can negotiate due to the side skirting of the carbody. It will interfere with the swing of the trucks if operated on too tight a curve.

I hope this helps.

I have the Proto2 NJ Transit version and it's in a display case as I write this. Didn't really notice if it says O42 'cause it's has always been run on my O72 oval with the matching passenger cars. It runs great, love the sounds and the flashing strobes. I was lucky to find the dummy unit also.
